If you want to see something of Palma that is off the normal tourist path, head for the Mercat Olivar, in the Plaza Olivar, near Placa d’Espana.
The covered market is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 2pm over two floors of a huge hall. Fresh produce is on the ground floor, with meat and cheese upstairs.
It is big and bright and colourful and has a typical spanish atmosphere. The displays of fish and seafood are spectacular, as are the stalls groaning under the weight of fresh fruit and vegetables. Vegetarians might want to avoid the meat section – this is no sanitised supermarket – but the choice for carnivors is second to none.
Flowers also dazzle the senses. Stop for a drink and a snack at one of the tapas bars and rub shoulders with some real locals!
